Welcome to Day 12 of my 15-day UX Writing Challenge. For today’s task, I am required to craft an error message for a user trying to create an account.
Scenario: A user is creating an account. When they are asked to enter their name, they get an error message. A fraud detection software thinks their name is fake — but it’s wrong 5% of the time.
Challenge: Write an error message that prompts them to fix the error without shaming them for having a fake-sounding name.
Constraint: 45 characters max
I think I enjoy writing error messages, so today’s challenge is fun. My first thought was — how do I help the user maneuver this obstacle in their experience? What’s the goal of my copy?
Error messages need to fulfill three goals:
- Explain simply and clearly that there is a problem and what that problem is without shaming them or assuming that they are a fraud.
2. Provide a solution so that users can return and complete the process immediately.
3. Turn the delay into an experience that is as pleasant as possible.
So what are the possible ways to move forward? This depends on the type of product the user is interacting with, but here are some suggestions:
While this UX writing brief didn’t state the type of product the user is interacting with, I chose the first 3 options to make my copy samples.
Let's get into it!
